Wow, what an exciting night I had! First, I was wandering around P-Squared, seeing what was new.. when I happened across Philip Linden himself, in his office! He’s such a friendly guy, we hung out and chatted for a bit.

Next, I wanted to show him around Corona Cay where I live. After the tour, we stopped by the Rezzednecks trailer for some dinner. Unfortunately, he didn’t like the pizza..

Now that we are in Halloween season, I have been very busy putting together a haunted house on my parcel. I wanted to make it interactive, and I remembered something I saw several months ago.

I had been out exploring, and was walking across some land when a circle of light lit up beneath my feet. Before I knew it, zombies were appearing all around me. I was surrounded! Arms outstretched and groaning, they shambled after me as I quickly backed away. I noticed each zombie had a health meter over their head, that showed 100%. Quickly finding a gun in my inventory, I started firing at them. Sure enough, after taking several gunshots, the zombie burst into pieces and was dead.

As I said, that was several months ago and I had no idea how to find those zombies now.. but I knew I wanted them! Thinking back, I recalled that I had taken a snapshot or two of them and sent them to flickr. Luckily, when you send a snapshot to flickr via SL Buzz, it captures the Slurl. After digging back through about 30 pages of my flickr album, I found the slurl. And to my amazement.. those zombies were still there, when I TP’d over!

The creator is Un4given Spoonhammer, and her shop is called Soup Kitchen. I took a visit to the shop earlier this afternoon- there are quite a large selection of ghoul and monster generators! After some thought, I ended up getting some traditional zombies. After all, who doesn’t love zombies at Halloween? Since they were copy, I placed several generators strategically around my haunted house and tested them out several times. I had a lot of fun running around with my 1928 Thompson- a rezday gift courtesy of Crap Mariner- and blew up some zombies. It even came with a score counter that I placed outside on the front porch.

Naturally.. the fun couldn’t stop there. I knew I had to share this wonderful find with my friends and neighbors. Within the hour, nearly everyone on Corona Cay had a zombie generator hidden in their homes.. they just don’t know it yet! Finally, I placed a generator in the entrance of Destination Station.. this will give newbies and visitors to the Station a little excitement as they browse the places to explore. Gun in hand, I positioned myself atop the tower in the center of Destination Station. From up here, I had the perfect vantage point. I can see the whole island.. and I am in a good position to pick off the zombies from above- sniper style- should any visitors need help. And should any of my neighbors log on.. well, I can clearly see their homes from up here, so I won’t miss the action of they trigger any of those zombies I left for them. Now all thats left to do is settle in, and wait for the fun to begin.

TP to Soup Kitchen

In my last post I mentioned that I started working for Sand Castle Studios, and that there was an upcoming event that I would talk more about, later. Well, that time has come.

My very first client was Mykael Sciavo, who was looking to have a custom club built. During the many conversations we had with Mykael, we discovered that he wanted the club to have an angelic theme, a cathedral style building in whites and gray, with a statue of an angel at the front entrance.. a club that would stand out from the rest. Mykael’s vision was very unique and specific, and the last several weeks were spent bringing his dream to life.

It has been such an interesting and fulfilling experience and I am so happy that I was able to help out with this project. Now its complete, and I’m very proud to announce the grand opening event of Imperfect Angel, tomorrow night starting at 5pm SLT with the performance of Damian Carbenell, who was just added this morning! The event will continue throughout the evening, with my personal favorite musician, Maximillion Kleene headlining at 8pm.

Since I joined Second Life back in December of 2007, I’ve been insatiably interested in the business side of SL. I’ve tried my hand at everything from art, to opening a little shop and selling a few things here or there, to freelance writing for various magazines. I’ve also been curious about the concept of actually working in SL. You know the types of jobs I mean- you often see customer service representatives in some of the larger, well known stores. Or maybe a host for a club. I love how Second Life isn’t just a game. It can be whatever you make of it- including a creative outlet, or a place of business.

A handful of months ago, I put out the call on Plurk that I was looking for an SL job so I could make some extra money. A few people got back to me with various offers, but the one that stood out to me as the most interesting, and promising, was Gianna Borgnine and her in-world company, Sand Castle Studios.

Sand Castle Studios is a full service marketing firm and design studio. We offer professional solutions to help businesses maximize the full potential of 3D virtual worlds and social media by creating interactive, social, and 3D experiences.

Sand Castle Studios has done a lot of work with various clients, such as Treet TV, Studio Nails, Draxter Despres, RAGE Combat Sports and more. Most recently, one of the larger projects that Sand Castle was involved with was President Obama’s speech in Ghana that was streamed into Second Life. (There is an article about that event here.)

I took the position of Brand Strategist, which means I do sales and project management. When a client comes into the studio, I help them determine what services they need from us, and see the project through to its completion. Several Strategists were hired together and a couple of weeks ago, we had a group training session/employee orientation with both owners of SCS- Gianna Borgnine and Reed Steamroller.

The training session was actually in two parts, and we had the option of attending the two sessions on different days. Most of us stayed for both sessions all in one shot though, which ended up being four and a half hours long, all in voice chat! There was a ton of information for us to learn, and I was taking notes like crazy through the whole thing. It was great though- really interesting and it really didn’t feel like it lasted that long, at all.

Being a Brand Strategist is a lot of work, but its very challenging and very rewarding- I love it! We are able to do a lot of the work via IM and email, but also need to spend a certain number of hours in the studio per week, so that we can greet incoming traffic and help people who are here looking for our services. There are no set hours, which means sometimes I might be here by myself and other times, it might be a full house!

I think its so funny that even in Second Life, you can arrive at work, clock in on a scripted timeclock, and chat with your co-workers as you start your day with a cup of coffee. Everyone I work with has been incredibly cool, and it has been really fun working here- I love this job! There are a couple of projects I am involved with, and its really full filling to see them come together from scratch, and being able to help out with it. There will be more information on the projects as it gets closer to them finishing. But one of them involves having a club built from the ground up, and helping to organizing a grand opening event (coming SOON! And I can’t wait to go to that!). And the other is helping to organize a grid-wide coupon vendor system that stores will be able to participate in. In short, customers will be able to get this coupon book that will have over $200,000L in savings from all of the participating stores. Each store will have a full page ad, LM to their store, and a coupon of whatever value they want. Customers will be able to visit all their favorite stores and redeem the coupons. (If you are a store owner and would like to participate, please contact me. There is no cost to you for this first demo trial of the coupon vendor!) I’m going to be so broke when this coupon book comes out, lol. But I love the idea, sort of like a grid wide hunt in terms of people hopping from store to store, but not necessarily freebies. Store owners can set the value of their coupon to anything they want, be it 10L off an item, or even make the item free. Thats up to each store owner.

This morning, I noticed a really great (and funny!) post by Phaylen Fairchild about her take on the Sion Chickens. It’s a great read, I recommend going to take a look. Sion Zaius Is Laughing At You.

I really enjoyed reading what she had to say, and many of her points are ones that I’ve heard time and again from other people. Lately, it seems like everyone is hating on Sion Zaius, because they are frustrated at having to pay out so much money to keep their chicken habit going. But I have some points of my own, about this. I left a comment on Phaylens blog, but I’d like to share it here also.

I loved reading your take on the Sion Chickens. (And thank you for the nice words about my blog.)

I feel that I really need to step in here though, and defend Sion Zauis and his chicken industry. As you said, its brilliant. And its also very fair, when you stop to think about it..

Yes, raising and breeding these chickens does include a lot of fees. However, the actual cost is very small and in many cases, people are able to recoop (See? I can do it, too!) the money they have to shell out, by selling eggs and other items.

Lets just say for a moment that a person has enough self control to only get one chicken. As you said, one food set will feed one chicken for an entire month, and only costs $240. Even if you wanted to breed and sell the eggs, you are still only paying less than $500L per month- only now, you can sell the eggs for roughly $75-$100L each. On average, a hen will lay 2 eggs per day. Even if you sold only one egg per day at the rock bottom price of $50L, you are still making a very nice profit.

Now, consider the fact that most other SL pets can cost upwards of $2000L each, and there is no way to make money from them. Which is the better deal?

Now yes, Sion is a genius. I even called him an evil genius in one of my blog posts, but it was all in jest. But when you think about it, his ‘nickle and dime’ method is extraordinarily fair. Eggs are literally a dime a dozen. Once you get into the chicken groups and communities, its very easy to get eggs for free or trade. You can also find lots of places that will give them away as lucky chair prizes, in midnight mania boards, etc. So really, now that the eggs are out there in such abundance, there would be no NEED for anyone to buy directly from Sion. The only way he is able to make any kind of profit is by charging very small amounts for very necessary items. Those transport cages that you mentioned for $20L actually come in sets of 15, I believe. Same for the egg protectors. It costs $40L for a set of 20. That is an extremely small amount to you and I- but multiply that by the thousands of people who are raising chickens, and its a very nice business for Sion.

In addition to that, he is constantly working on upgrades and new features for the eggs.. and other cool items are on the horizon, such as Sion Corn, that you can grow! We are all very excited for that.

Finally, the chickens themselves are even scripted to have their own personalities. If you watch them, they interact differently with each other, and with their owners. They will recognize you when you approach them, and will come over and rub against your legs like cats. Its very cute! They like to sleep cuddled together in little clusters. Some of them get along with each other better than others, and will follow one another around. They play with toys that you give them. I could go on, and on.

Anyway, my point is that a lot of times, people get caught up in the idea of having to pay for food, rings to prevent hatching, transport boxes, etc. But they tend to forget, there is NO other pet in SL that is this interactive, this realistic as far as having to be careful and treat them like real animals so they’ll live and be happy.. AND includes the necessary tools to start up your own SL business and turn a profit.

Thats just my two cents.

In my last post, I talked about the R&R holodeck system and the Pacifica house I tore down and modified into a skybox. Well, I’ve been working endlessly on it over the past week, and I’m happy to say that its finally finished! And I am extremely pleased with the results..

Often times when I’m trying to work out the interior design of any of my builds, I have a lot of ideas but end up never quite following through. The last time I used the full version of the Pacifica house, I had it out for a couple of months and only sparsely furnished it with a few couches and rugs, but never got around to completing it. I was pretty determined to do a good job on this one, though. And I am content that it really is finished- all thats left to do is some texturing. But as far as furniture and decor, I’m quite pleased!

The furniture and home accents I ended up using for the house were a huge mish-mash of different designers. Two things I knew I wanted to focus on were modern/art deco furniture, and lots of plants. Since this space was so open and airy, I wanted to give the appearance of bringing the outside, in.

I’m not much of a builder yet, so I went out and bought almost everything you’ll see in these pictures- with the exception of the windowseat, here. While I was out shopping, I saw a couple of pretty birds perched on top of the Belle Belle subscribe-o-matic sign, and decided it was a cute idea. This adorable little bird is from Happy Mood. It moves its head around and chirps, and I just love it. It was copy, so I put another on the back porch.. and scattered a few of them around Corona Cay.

A wonderful way to start my mornings is to curl up in the windowsill and sip some coffee, while I go through my email and plurk. This lovely coffee tray is by CaT Homestyle.

I spent ages trying to decide how to fill this curved area of the house. What I really wanted was a curved couch that would fit perfectly along the wall. But I didn’t see any that I really loved, and it would be impossible to tell if it fit just right without being able to test it out- and furniture does not come with demos. But I ended up finding these great retro lounge chairs from ~Shag~.. and they were even lucky chair items! I finished it off with a round coffee table from Depoz, an ivory floor planter from BellaRose and a magazine rack from Plush Pod. Naturally, I wouldn’t be a good hostess if I didn’t have snacks and drinks available for my guests. The yummy cheese ball and tray of mimosas are from Naughty Nibbles.

When it comes to lighting, I am extremely picky. I love it when I kind find a lamp that can double as art, so when I saw this Willow Lamp by [marked], I fell in love with it. Since it wasn’t set for sale, I contacted the creator, Sable Sunset. Turns out she is working on a scripting system for it at the moment. But she was sweet enough to sell this version to me ‘as is’, which was just perfect. It was the finishing touch on this area of the skybox, and I love it. I am also crazy about the swag light curtains from Second Spaces!!  And speaking of art- the painting on the wall is Tears At Sunset, by Keeme Brown. Turns out he is an amazing artist, and this piece is probably my favorite, so far.

One of the hardest things to find was a console table to go behind this (Free!) couch by LUXus. Everything was either the wrong color, wrong texture, too short, too tall, etc. I finally found this great table at Plush Pod, and snatched it right up. I love that it has a glass top, also. Very pretty!

Finally, the deck I built. Its a little cramped, and I thought about making it bigger.. but it would mean extending the deck in front of the window, and I really didn’t want to block any of the view. Incredibly, that planter is a free gift from CaT Homestyle! The deck chairs are also a gift, from Anpuli Design. The ice tea is by Alora Jewell, you can find it at Lavish Chicken Shop. And last but certainly not least is the charming farmhouse porch swing, by Henredon Homes and Gardens.

I know there is a lot of furniture I didn’t mention, but it would be difficult to list it all in this post. If you see something in any of the pictures and want to know where its from, please feel free to comment or drop me an IM. But most of the rest of the items were from places like The Loft, Unique Shabby Chic, Mudhoney, Ramos Designs, Aintree Gardens, Pillow Talk, Pondlife… you get the idea. Like I said- I searched all over the grid to furnish this home, and had lots of fun doing it! I’m very proud of the design and layout, and its been a great hangout spot to have friends over.

I think I’m in love. And its with my skybox.

You see, recently in Prim Perfect, I wrote an article about the R&R Holodeck system. (If you want to see the article, its in the June issue.) I had stumbled across this holodeck system by mistake when I was map hopping, and immediately became fascinated. I went back several times to play with the demo at their mainstore. Anyway, after the article came out, one of the creators of the system was extremely kind and sent one to me as a thank you for writing the article. I swear to God, I think this is my favorite thing in SL. I get bored fairly quickly with whatever current skybox or build I have, and I try to change it often to keep things fresh.

The holodeck system absolutely blows me away. Hundreds of scenes to chose from.. the ‘box’ that the scenes are inside will rez as small as 20×20, or as big as 100×100. I have mine set to 70×70.But it looks much.. much bigger.

The first thing I did after setting up the holodeck was start trying to decide what sort of home or skybox to put inside it. I tried several from my inventory. Each one was discarded as soon as I rezzed it. Either the style was wrong, or it was too big, or too many prims, or not enough views. I thought about building a little ‘outdoor area’ with some simple cushions and maybe a chair or two. But that would clash, depending on the holodeck scene. What I really wanted was something that would normally be the opposite of what I like- one nice sized room, with lots and lots of glass. I ended up pulling out my Pacifica prefab from Funky Modern Prefabs. But it was too big- and I really didn’t need all that room. While the views were great, it was too much for what I wanted, at 166 prims and three levels. So, I unlinked it. And prim by prim, I began tearing it down until I was left with one room on the ground level, and half the floor left over from the other room. Shift-dragging some of the borders and resizing some of the walls, I turned what was left into a very spacious and simple skybox, with fantastic views, and a deck. I turned some of the open spaces into more walls and windows, and was VERY pleased with the end result. For those that don’t remember, I originally blogged the Pacifica in Glass Houses. As you can see from all the after shots, its changed a lot. I still want to retexture it. And I haven’t figured out how I want to decorate it, just yet. But the important thing is, I never have to worry about getting tired of the view.

No matter if I want to look at a sprawling countryside of wheatfields, a busy city street, or a breathtaking oceanfront view, all it takes is a click of the holodeck controller.

Oh, and I’m not stuck just staying inside and looking out. If I feel like taking a hike across the scenary, the 70×70 size holodeck I have rezzed allows me plenty of space to run and explore. It really feels like you’re there.

It is so amazing, and I love it. Which brings me back to the title of this post. The downside is, I haven’t gotten anything done in two days! I have my holodeck set on slideshow so the scene changes every 5 minutes.. and I spent all my time running from window to window, looking out and marveling at all the pretty views.

If you are reading this and own any sort of land in SL, even if its just a 512, I would visit the slurl above and think about getting one of these systems. I think it is probably the best investment any home owner could make. Especially if you live on mainland and you’re sick of seeing ugly builds! The holodeck system is super low prim- I think the whole setup is under 10 prims.  Incredible.

The Future Home On The Net by KoSMoX Voom is an intriguing exhibit, and actually quite accurate. Go inside the structure and enter one of the many pods. Have a seat on the chair inside, and you will see a beautiful panoramic view of a landscape. Much like the panoramic I have surrounding my skybox in my home on the ‘Net.
